Big Wong – A tiny hidden gem in G’town

A tiny eatery in the in-lanes of Baani Square, a flourishing complex on Sohna Road, Gurgaon that is now home to various cafés, restaurants, bakeries and stores, caught our attention. Big Wong – the name was interesting, the ambience cozy and the staff welcoming. It was one of the tiniest Pan Asian restaurant we have recently been to {Chi Asian Cookhouse, Crystal Jade, Guppy by Ai, Fatty Bao), Mr. Choy (Myraa’s new all-time favourite) being a close second.

Serving Chinese and Thai delicacies, the eatery has five to six odd tables – set up in a straight row, assorted posters on one section of the wall, a few golden mirrors and artifacts on the opposite wall, abstract multi-coloured mats on the tables and orange lamps overhead adding colour to the décor.

The menu is simple – Dimsum, Soups, Starters, Mains, Rice, Noodles and Drinks (restricted to soft beverages and cold pressed juices) – and means business. We ordered Crispy veg Thai style (INR 260) to begin our meal. A delicious assortment of carrots, beans, babycorns, mushrooms and water chestnuts tossed with chilli, garlic and basil, it was the perfect start to our late Sunday lunch. For mains we relished the BW Special drunken noodles (INR 250) with Exotic vegetables in hoisin sauce (INR 300). The veggies were delicious and not too spicy serving as the perfect accompaniment to the delightful spicy flat-Thai style-noodles.

A chat with the staff and we found out that they have opened a new (and much larger) outlet in G-Town’s Galleria market – with a liquor license. Happy with our discovery and sated with the lovely meal, we headed out for some retail therapy.
